Are you worried about your weekly meetings with your boss? Do you only talk about your weekly tasks and plans during these meetings? This message is for those who don’t see the value in these meetings.

Ladies and gentlemen, your weekly meetings with your boss are not just ordinary one-on-one chats. Regardless of your job, make sure you take charge of these meetings and set the direction for the discussion.

I was fortunate to have a boss who taught me how important it is to grow through these weekly meetings. She allowed me to lead the discussion and shape the meeting.

What should you talk about during these weekly meetings?

Here are 5 things you can include to make the most of them:

  1. Share Your Main Achievements – Talk about the important things you completed in the past week. Don’t just list them like regular updates. Focus on three key accomplishments and explain how they affected you, your work, and the department’s goals (if applicable).
  2. Share Your Developmental Areas – also, talk about milestones you weren’t able to achieve, and their impact on your work and seek feedback on how you could have handled it differently.
  3. Prioritize Your Tasks – Share the top four tasks for the upcoming week (or fewer if that’s more appropriate for your role) and explain their impact. Make sure these tasks align with your long-term goals.
  4. Ask for Help if Needed – If you’re stuck on a project or need guidance, ask your boss for input. If you can’t reach a decision due to multiple people involved, request your boss’s intervention.
  5. Don’t Seek Constant Approval – Make sure you don’t come across as lacking confidence and always seeking approval from your boss. Be confident in your achievements and steer the direction of the meeting yourself.

These one-on-one meetings are for your personal growth. Your success

depends on your self-assurance, enthusiasm, and ability to take initiative. Be passionate and self-driven.

What if there’s nothing to talk about?

Sometimes, you might not have any updates. In that case, talk to your boss a day before the meeting and let them know you don’t have anything to discuss. If your boss doesn’t have anything to discuss either, the meeting can be canceled. This saves time!

Make sure you have these meetings at least three times a month and take control as the true expert in your field.
