Relax, it’s just a panic attack!

Sam, I think I am going crazy! I am unable to focus on what’s happening around! Why am I sweating? Gosh the same feeling I had two years ago is back! I feel I may lose my sanity – why are these thoughts coming back? I was discussing this with my wife, Sam back in Jul 2012 at Lavasa.

We had gone for our weekend getaway to Lavasa and had great plans but these thoughts ruined our trip. I was so scared that I googled it and found that my symptoms were hinting me towards thyroid. I was happy that I had found the root cause of these thoughts but I was wrong!

It wasn’t Thyroid as my uncle (A leading diabietologist and endocrinologist) confirmed, saying that everything was normal and what happened was a clear case of a panic attack and I had nothing to worry about! “Nothing to worry about?” How could he ask me not to worry – I knew what I was going through. Those killer thoughts were eating me from the inside – what can you do when you feel like you are going crazy?

What the hell is a PANIC ATTACK?

Well, after a few sessions with my therapist/psychologist, I realized that it was just a bloody panic attack and it was harmless! Yes, panic attacks are harmless provided you connect with them and listen to what signs they are sending out.

So why do we get panic attacks?

There are several reasons for getting a panic attack some of which are mentioned below:

  • Unaddressed childhood memories/pain
  • Suppressed emotions/anger
  • Overanalysing a situation
  • Fear of the unknown
  • Major life transitions, creating stress
  • Work related stress
  • Anxious disorder, since childhood (mostly due to overprotective environment)

How do we recognize panic attacks?

Apart from a feeling of intense fear and multiple negative thoughts you may also experience some of the following:

  • Shortness of breath (sometimes leading to heavy breathing)
  • Dizziness
  • Chest tightness
  • Sweating
  • Shaky hands
  • Tingling sensation in the head
  • Having difficulty concentrating

A panic attack typically lasts for about 10-20 minutes and can reoccur if not handled in the right way.

How do you cure a panic attack?

All you need to do is connect with your fear/anxiety. You may not be in a position to analyze it so don’t even think of doing that. Here is what you could do to connect with your panic attack (just like I did)

  • Take a deep breath and relax!
  • Document every detail of your fear/anxiety
  • Use visualization technique to overcome your fears and anxiety
  • Talk, Talk and Talk until the junk is thrown out of your head!

The best way to tackle an anxiety/panic attack is to seek help from a Therapist or a Counselor. Mental health is as important as your physical health and we need to accept this fact. We need to be fine with seeking help before it leads to something else!

In case, you are having panic attacks all you need to do is relax and tell yourself that it’s just a panic attack! If you wish to seek help on getting rid of your panic attacks – feel free to reach out to me on akshayem@gmail.com.
