Are you Dr. Bruce Banner or The Hulk or both? (Part 1)
Are you Dr. Bruce Banner or The Hulk or both? (Part 1)

I am sure many of you would know Dr. Bruce Banner and his alter ego ‘The Hulk’. But I would still like to mention a few things about Banner and his alter ego for the benefit of all those who don’t know him.

The Hulk(aka Dr. Bruce Banner) is a fictional superhero created by the late Mr. StanLee and Jack Kirby. The character is both the Hulk, a green-skinned, hulking and muscular humanoid possessing a vast degree of physical strength, and his alter ego Dr. Bruce Banner, a physically weak, socially withdrawn, and emotionally reserved physicist, the two existing as independent personalities and resenting of the other. So you must be wondering why am I suddenly talking about Bruce and his green-skinned alter ego. Well, today we will talk about what causes anxiety and how anxiety can be our best friend! In a series of 2 blogs, I am touching upon this complex topic as we keep facing it (anxiety) almost on a daily basis.

So when does Banner turn into Hulk?

Following his accidental exposure to gamma rays during the detonation of an experimental bomb, Banner is physically transformed into the Hulk when subjected to emotional stress, at or against his will, often leading to destructive rampages and conflicts that complicate Banner’s civilian life. We all have a Banner in us!

Banner is synonymous with anxiety, fear and general weakness. We are no different – we are intelligent, anxious, fearful and at times also come across as weak. When the level of our anxiety crosses its limits we turn into a monster and are often seen getting into fights to take control of the situation. Thus, drawing a parallel to the green-skinned monster (Hulk).

Getting angry is one of our defense mechanisms mainly to demonstrate our power. Little do we know that this puts us in a bad picture and people call us anything but strong! Some people always seem to be angry or aggressive. Try spending sometime with such aggressive/angry people and you will surely find the little Banner hiding inside somewhere.

So, what causes Anxiety?

There are numerous factors that cause anxiety. It could be either due to personality factors, physical health, difficult life situations or in some cases even genetic. Most often than not, the roots of anxiety are found in our childhood experiences. Sometimes messages given by parents, guardians and/or friends leave a deep impact in our minds thus creating a chemical reaction leading to anxiety. Typically, anxiety gets triggered by some events or experiences of the past that reminds us of a bad memory or a traumatic event and we react to such situations by displaying child-like behaviours (either we withdraw ourselves from people or throw tantrums).

Is anxiety good?

Anxiety can be both Good and Bad! Anxiety puts us in a ‘no solution zone’ as we are constantly worrying about an unrealistic outcome. Thus, being in a ‘No solution zone’ affects our progress in life. We continue to be in the victim position and blame others for our situation. But having anxious thoughts before a meeting or a presentation is good because it keeps us on our toes and pushes us to give our best shot!

Why does it lead to anger?

Anxiety is a mental health condition that can cause feelings of worry, fear or panic. Most of the anxiety cases lead to a panic attack and people may experience physical symptoms like chest pain, etc.

For us humans, self-image is one of the most critical determinants of a positive and healthy life. We do not like to come across as weak or timid. Anxiety makes us feel out of control and the only way to control things is to throw terrible temper tantrums. As mentioned above, anger lets us control things and people —it keeps people away from us and diverts their attention to their own fears(obviously, our anger starts affecting the persons self-image).

How does one get rid of anxiety?

You cannot run away from anxiety – it is in your blood!! But, you can get your anxiety to work for you through awareness and acceptance. Anxiety can be your best friend!

In the next post, you will see how you (Banner) can get your Hulk (Anger/Anxiety) to be your best friend!!
